Middle School Tour

Joe Rooney took a tour of the Abington Middel School, below is a letter he
wrote to Dr. Fecher, Superintendent of Schools, Abington School District.

Dr Fecher I want to thank ASD and Mr. Curtain for an outstanding tour of the Middle School this afternoon. We agreed to meet
at 4:00 and I expected to take an hour. We spent over two hours looking at every area. I was able to do exactly what I'd hoped
when I requested to investigate the school.

Mr. Curtain was a thorough, knowledgeable and a gracious host. I observed the staff hard at work cleaning every area of the school.
I appreciate both his time and the staff's hard work.

I learned a lot and have much clearer picture of what I have heretofore only read about and listened to others describe. I will offer my
observations.

ASD has incredible value in the Middle School. In my opinion, there is at least $50 million of value in the structure of this very
sound building. It is poured, reinforced concrete and looks as solid as the day it was completed. It is built with 5 modules which would be
relatively simple to isolate and renovate. The science wing looks to be only 30 years old - that fact has been ignored in all the reports I
have read.
The gyms are in fine shape. The water damage on the west wall looks like a roof drainpipe that backed up and flooded the floor.
That is a simple repair. The plumbing and electrical throughout have easy access with what appears 10-foot drop ceilings with ample access
above.
My evaluation of the HVAC is that there are many options to improve it. There is wonderful natural light throughout the building;
the blinds in the classrooms are a detriment. Put new blinds on the windows along the west.

The first order of business is the roof. It is beyond service life roll roofing and is a mess. The roof penetrations all need new boots and the
machinery on the roof is mounted on rotting timber. This is a very doable job with the modular construct. There are 5 sections to the building
each with a dividing block wall. One section can be repaired at a time.

All the bathrooms need complete renovations. Classrooms are large enough and easily modified. Several have already eliminated the central
offices, incorporating that space into adjacent rooms.

The library is beautiful. The idea that we would destroy such a beautiful library, then build another is a crazy waste of taxpayers' money!

I am just an amateur, but it is a wasteful plan to raze this valuable building only to build a structure that I doubt will be as sturdy. As we looked
out the second and third story across the flagpole, the fields and east to the Church Steeple, I can imagine beautiful condominiums whose owners
would revel at those views. Imagine destroying these same views and paving the site for a parking lot! Who would make such a visionless plan?

I was surprised how teachers leave their rooms a mess at the end of the day. It is a sign to me of both poor leadership and teachers who take no
pride in their surroundings. Is our new high school being treated as poorly?

I can't believe that either school leadership, or the board walked through this building and saw what I observed. The descriptions I've heard
are so much worse than what actually exists
. I trust ICS even less after my visit today. ICS has not served our community well.

I salute the designers and builders of our school and believe that our community will be far better served to repair what is needed
and save the valuable structure we already own.

Cordially, Joe Rooney

PS- People who don't know how to fix anything are poor judges of what needs repair and what needs replacement.
